What is a suffix?

A suffix is a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to create a new word or change its grammatical function. For example, adding "-ness" to "happy" creates the noun "happiness." Common suffixes include -ing, -ed, -ly, and -tion.

What is the "Silent E" rule?

The "Silent E" rule (or Magic E) states that when a word ends with a consonant, a vowel, a consonant, and an 'e', the final 'e' is silent but makes the preceding vowel "say its name" (long sound). For example, in "rat", the 'a' is short. Add an 'e' to the end to make "rate", and the 'a' becomes long.

Are there any English words that end in "V"?

Native English words very rarely end in the letter "V". When you hear a "v" sound at the end of a word in English, it is almost always spelled with "-ve" (e.g., love, give, have, dove). The few exceptions are usually abbreviations (like "rev") or borrowed words (like "lev" or "spiv").
